LG removed Lee Jae-won and right-hander Lee Ji-gang from its first-team roster ahead of the 2023 Shinhan Bank Solar KBO League game against SSG Landers at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on Friday. Instead, the team recalled left-hander Lee Woo-chan and infielder Lee Ju-hyung to the first team.
Lee Jae-won felt pain in his left thigh while catching a foul ball while fielding in the Incheon SSG game on April 24 and was replaced in the bottom of the fifth inning.
He underwent a medical examination at the hospital and was diagnosed with a micro-injury to his left thigh muscle.
Lee suffered a side injury in late March, just before the start of the regular season, which kept him off the first team roster for about a month.
After rejoining the first team for the first time this season on June 6, Lee was hitting .270 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 15 games. He even hit a two-run home run in the second inning of the previous game.
However, another injury halted his progress.
LG manager Yeom Kyung-yeop shared the news of Lee’s injury, saying, “Even if he comes back quickly, it will take about two weeks. If it’s late, it will take about 20 days,” and sighed, “He’ll be called up to the first team after he plays in a live game.”
With Lee Ji-gang out of the lineup, right-hander Young-gun Lee Min-ho, who had been given a chance to start since the beginning of the month, steps into the void.
After starting the season as a four-starter, Lee was dropped from the first team roster due to elbow soreness after pitching 5⅓ innings of two runs (unearned) against the Kiwoom Heroes on March 5, his first start of the season.
After recovering from the injury, Lee Min-ho pitched in a Futures (second division) league game on the 17th to get a feel for the game, and is close to returning to the first team.
“Lee Min-ho will start against the Jamsil Lotte Giants on the 30th,” Yeom said, “and he will throw about 80 to 90 pitches.”
The promising infielder’s enrollment in the first team means he will gain experience.
“I was thinking of bringing him up if there were any injuries. He has the ability to hit,” he said. “We’ll use him as a pinch hitter and give him a chance to start. It’s about giving him a chance to experience.”
